One buried image, worth tens of millions.

In a source-apportionment matter at a USEPA Superfund site, the outcome hinged on finding every potentially responsible party. The deciding piece of evidence was a label on an old site map.

The challenge

Superfund files are among the largest and most complex there are, often spanning a century of operations. One source profile, attributed to pesticides, was disputed, and neither party would take ownership of it.

The approach

The site's documents and data were loaded into Statvis, and a first timeline of critical events and documents was ready for review within minutes. Sources were then built from the chemistry alongside the document history.

To test the disputed source, the team searched the record for pesticides. Statvis searches with environmental context, taking in related terms across documents and data, and it surfaced a site map image labelled "insecticide storage", along with related references elsewhere in the files.

The result

Statvis consolidated the finding into cited evidence, linked to the document, paragraph and image, so it could be verified independently. That reference helped identify an additional potentially responsible party and contributed to a favourable outcome in the apportionment.
